Men in Multicultural Counseling: Envisioning Change Through A Male Lens
Friday, November 7, 2014
8am-4pm
Mercer County Community College Conference Center, Lawrenceville, NJ
Overview: The conference will focus on helping to sensitize therapists to the unique perspectives that impact on men's lives, especially given their particular cultural backgrounds, so that we might improve our ability to create a welcoming and empowering counseling relationship. The day is planned to provide a nourishing and supportive environment in which to interact with other caring professionals who are committed to making a real difference in the world – to reduce the violence and to make it safer and healthier for all. The conference will provide a variety of presentations and workshops designed to assist clinicians in working with men from multicultural backgrounds.
Keynote: The morning keynote will address the importance of working with men in multicultural contexts, and how increasing our awareness of our own privilege and an understanding of Intersectionality Theory can help clinicians with this work.
Men's Multicultural Counseling Panel: The morning keynote will be followed by a Men's Multicultural Counseling Panel. The panel will provide an insight into the lives of men from different backgrounds presented by therapists who represent a rich and diverse segment of our population – African American, Bi-racial/ Mexican Am./Caucasion, South Asian/Indian Am., Gay/Chinese Am. The panelists will address personal experiences of “growing up in my skin”, as well as personal and professional implications for working with men in counseling who are presenting from similar backgrounds to their own. While not intending to speak for all men of certain backgrounds, the panelists will do their best to explore helpful considerations.
Afternoon Presentations: The afternoon will provide an array of workshop offerings to choose from by the co-sponsoring NJCA Divisions, all addressing men and multicultural counseling as it relates to their particular Division's purview. Some workshop topics may include: Working with Men to stop violence (especially against themselves, women and children), Working with Men with Disabilities, Working with Muslim Men, Working with Adjudicated Youth.
The conference will offer 7 CEUs. There will also be an opportunity to meet with other counselors who might be interested in signing up to join an ongoing multicultural counseling clinical support group for counselors.
Registration Information will be available soon on the NJCA/NJAMC website. Please call 609-419-8900 or email robertoschiraldi@yahoo.com with any questions.
